In the articleHow Women in Business are shaping the future” By future Learn, the history of women in business is highlighted and can be dated back to as early at 1870 B.C. with a woman from Northern Iraq being successful in the trading network. In more recent history Future Learn Highlights a couple of women who have been major successes in business such as:

  • Margaret Hardenback in 1659 who started as a dept collector growing to be the wealthiest woman in what would become New York at the time.
  • Mary Katherine Goddard who was the first woman publisher in 1766.
  • Madam CJ Walker who was CEO of a million-dollar hair care business in the 1890’s.
  • Coco Chanel, who opened her first boutique in 1913, whose business is still booming too this day!

These are only a few highlights of successful businesswomen Future Learn mentions. Future Learn also highlights there being a large influence of businesswomen in the 18th century trading network for major cities. According to Future Learn it wasn’t until the mid-19th century women were found doing more domestic duties which is when “traditional” gender-roles were introduced. Future Learn highlights that now for first time ever Female CEO’s run more than 10% of future 500 Companies! It’s important to note that although woman in business is growing, we have a long way to go. Let’s go Ladies!
